Abstract

Background:The present study was conducted to determine the effect of Sudarshan kriya yoga (SKY) on heart rate, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory rate, SPO2 and stress level. The daily life stress is associated with many physiological changes resulting in various ailments and significant decrements in human performance. The yogic breathing techniques may positively impact our compensatory mechanisms to restore functional cognitive reserves and other physiological systems are not completely understood. It is very likely that meditation and intentional rhythmic breathing like Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) may, in part, reduce the overall physiological strain and mental workload on these human systems. By reducing the physical and cognitive workloads on the organ systems, optimal human performance is accomplishable.

Methods: A total of 102 subjects were performed the SKY for 6 months. The cardio-respiratory parameters, as cited above were measured before and after the Yoga.

Results: Our results showed the statistically significant decrease in the values of heart rate, SBP, DBP, Pulse rate, respiratory rate as well as SPO2 after the six months of comprehensive SKY practice.

Conclusion: It has beneficial effects on cardiorespiratory physiology so it can be used as adjuvant therapy for management of lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and psychiatric disorders.
