Abstract

Background- Identification is the process of determining a person's individuality from certain physical traits that are specific to them. In the Henry Classification System there are three basic fingerprint patterns- loop, whorl, and arch, which constitute 60-70 percent, 25-35 percent, and 6-7 percent of all fingerprints respectively.

Material and Methods- The study was undertaken in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh during the period from May 2022 to September 2022. The study was conducted on 100 individuals (50 males and 50 females) comprising the medical students.

Results- Out of all the fingerprint patterns taken, highest frequency was formed by loops followed by whorls and arches. However, percentages of whorls were maximum in ring finger as compared to loops and arches.

Conclusion- Each person's fingerprint pattern is distinct and persistent throughout their lifetime. Fingerprints are already being an established entity in the field of identification and comparison of finger prints is a universally accepted method of establishing identity of an individual.
