Study on Association of Hepatitis B Virus Genotypes with the Serum ALT levels in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Northern India

Abstract

Introduction: Hepatitis B infection is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), an enveloped DNA virus that infects the liver and causes hepatocellular necrosis and inflammation. The aim of this study was to find association of different HBV genotype with the serum ALT level.

Methodology: Five ml of blood was collected in serum separation tube (SST). Serum was separated and tests were performed according to WHO guidelines and as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Various procedures and assays involved in the study was carried out with the serum, which will include; ALT estimation in Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory, Serological studies at Microbiology Laboratory of Central Laboratory, SMIH and Molecular characterization to detect HBV Genotypes and quantitative estimation at Central Molecular Research Laboratory (CMRL), Biochemistry Department, SGRRIM & HS.

Result & Conclusion: It was observed that association between different HBV Genotypes detected and raised ALT level is not significant.
